Regal
Hotel, Murphy, NC
Our
heritage here in Cherokee and Clay counties began back
one cold snowy day on February 19,1934. Peyton G. and Edythe
Grier Ivie traveled from Cornelia, Georgia with the vision
of Ivie Funeral Home.
They rented a space in the Regal Hotel
opening a furniture store in the front and a funeral parlor in the back. At first
they rented
an apartment but money was tight, so Mr. Ivie built a loft over the furniture
store for them to live.
Mrs.
Ivie had no stove or oven, so she cooked on a hot plate,
baked her cornbread in the hotel oven downstairs and kept
her milk in an icebox across the street at the
service station. The Ivies lived there three years. Funeral business was
very slow at first and Mr. Ivie recounted how they would have starved if
the T.V.A. (Tennessee Valley Authority) had not moved to the area.
Then
in 1937, Mr. Ivie purchased the property at 307 Valley River
Ave from Jim Green. In June of 1939 Wade Massey completed
the new funeral home and residence for Mr. And Mrs. Ivie.
The property was transformed many times through the years
by Mr. Ivie but remained in use until 1990. On June 16, 1990
Grier Ivie, son of Peyton and Edythe Ivie, opened the current
facility on Peachtree Street.
