MARTHA MOCK BUTNER DAVIS
Adeline Martha Mock Butner Davis, 90, of Murphy died Sunday (April 20, 2008) in an Asheville, NC hospital. A native of Winston Salem, NC, she had been living in Cherokee County for the past 63 years. She was the daughter of the late Luther N. and Martha Mock Butner and the wife of the late William Merle Davis, who died Aug. 17, 1993.
She was educated in the city schools and graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College (ASU). She taught at Copeland in Surry County, NC and at Welcome in Davidson County, NC.
Martha was active in the Murphy First United Methodist Church. She spent 40+ years singing in the choir, teaching several Sunday School age groups, and serving on Trustees, Councils on Ministers, and Administrative Boards. In the United Methodist Women, she served as president of the local unit three times, as district officer in three different offices, as program reader, and other offices in her circle. She and Merle were MYF Counselors for three years.
Martha was also active in her community. She was a Den Mother with Cub Scouts and a Brownie leader. She served as president of P.T.A., Providence Hospital Auxiliary, Murphy Home Demonstration Club, and Cherokee Rose Garden Club. She was active in Murphy Medical Center Auxiliary for many years.
Surviving are her daughter, Ellen West and husband, Marlin “Whitie” West of Newberry, SC; a son, Fred Davis and wife, Pat Davis of Sadieville, KY; a sister, Mildred Park of Winston Salem; a brother, Luther Butner of Winston Salem; four granchildren, Bill Davis and wife, Dawn Davis, Jeff Davis, Michael Crowell, and Jackie Davis; a great grandson; four step-grandchildren, Marlin West and wife, Kim West, Katherine Knight and husband, Gary Knight, Karen McMahan and husband, Gary McMahan, and Jeffery West and wife, Debbie West; and eight step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday (April 23) in the Murphy First United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Yates officiating. Interment will be held in Sunset Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hubert, Wayne, and Steve Wells, Wayne Holland, Tommy McGuire, Wayne Watson, Jan Davidson, Bill Dyer, and Fred Lochaby.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Martha Mock Butner Davis to the Murphy First United Methodist Church, PO Box 86, Murphy, NC 28906 or the Murphy Medical Center, 4130 US Highway 64 East, Murphy, NC 28906 or the Murphy Public Library, 9 Blumenthal Street, Murphy, NC 28906.
