Millard
J. "Slim" Hurlburt, 83, of Andrews died Saturday,
December 13, 2003 in a Murphy hospital. A native
of St. Claire County, MI, but had been living in
Cherokee County for the past 28 years. He was the
son of the late Edward L. and Minnie Osier Hurlburt
and the husband of the late Elizabeth "Rosalie" Hubbarth
Hurlburt, who died on April 24, 1997. He had served
in the United States Coast Guard Reserves. He was
a retired tool and dye maker and was very active
in local charities, including building the Parish
Social Hall for his church, renovating the building
that later became the Hurlburt-Johnson Homeless Shelter,
built a building at the Bridge Ministries in Blairsville,
worked with "Meals On Wheels", and the Cherokee County
Food Bank. In 1996, he was a recipient of the Governor's
Award for outstanding volunteer service. He was a
member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
Surviving
are his wife, Ann M. Pitre Cole Hurlburt; ten daughters,
Sylvia Ramburger of Alto, MI, Michelle Devlamick
of Barton City, MI, Raye Marie Holly of Mass, MI,
Yvonne Romska of Emmett, MI, Cindy Matthews of Millersburg,
MI, Annette Peterson of Petersbough, NH, Charmaine
Taube of Millersburg, MI, Cheryl Alvarez of Avoca,
MI, Deanna Honsinger of Hayesville, and Shanna Brendle
of Marble; a son, Millard J. Hurlburt, Jr. of Murphy;
a sister, Edna Hurlburt of Flordia; 37 grandchildren,
and 36 great grandchildren.
Funeral
Mass will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday (Dec. 17) in the
Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Michael
Kottar officiating. Burial in the Valleytown Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Aaron Alvarez, Chris Peterson, Adam
Luther, Wayne Ramburger, Dave and Mike Devlamick.
The family
will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 Tuesday evening
at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews.
In lieu
of flowers the family requests memorials may be made
to the Cherokee County Food Bank, P.O. Box 696, Andrews,
NC 28901.
