GARTH JARRETT THOMPSON

Garth Jarrett Thompson, 91, of Hayesville died Sunday, February 26, 2006 in an Asheville hospital. A native and lifetime resident of Clay County, he was a son of the late Jarrett and Xenna Scroggs Thompson and the husband of the late Florence McGuire Thompson, who died September 30, 1995. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army in the European Theatre receiving three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Garth was a retired superintendent with the North Carolina Prison System. He was a charter member of the Hayesville VFW Post # 6812 and was a member of the Hayesville First United Methodist Church. He was known as the unofficial historian and storyteller for Clay County.
Surviving are a daughter, Becky Thompson Smith and husband, James of Hayesville; a son, Jarrett “Bud” Thompson of Hayesville; two grandchildren, Jordan Charles Smith and Garth Jarrett Smith; and a great granddaughter, Xenna Smith.
Funeral services at 2:00 PM Sunday (March 5) in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with Revs. Jackie Sellers and Kirk Hatherly officiating. Burial in the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Hayesville VFW Post # 6812, DAV Chapter # 73, VFW Post #10222, and American Legion Post #96. Pallbearers: Melvin Cantrell, Jack Capes, Fred Wendt, Gene Auberry, Bruce Davenport, and Aaron Martin.
The family will receive friends from 12-1:45 Sunday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.
