GEORGE EDWARD “Ed” PHILLIPS

George Edward “Ed” Phillips, 83, of Hayesville died Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2007) in a Towns County, GA hospital. A native of Clay County, he had lived in Blue Ridge, GA before returning to Clay County in 1963. He was the son of the late Fred and Manerva Stillwell Phillips and the husband of the late Polly Johnson Phillips, who died June 10, 2000. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army-Air Force. He retired after more than 40 years as a math teacher having taught in the Clay County, Fannin County, and Union County School Systems. Ed had also served as Clay County Superintendent of Schools in the early 1970’s. He was a member of the Truett Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Floyd Phillips and wife, Cecelia of Hayesville; a sister, Joanne Segner and husband, Carl of Tulsa, OK; a brother, Todd Phillips and wife, Virginia of Hayesville; two granddaughters, Kelly Jones and Lynn Cantrell; and three great grandchildren, Hunter Cantrell, Katie Cantrell, and Cecelia Jones.
Funeral services at 11:00 AM Friday (Feb. 23) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Revs. Charlie Shelton and Jacob Kyker officiating. Interment in the Moss Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73, VFW Post 10222, and the Hayesville VFW Post 6812 (Allison-Bristol). Pallbearers: Rondle Ford, Ben Brown, Vince Grobbel, Jim Beatty, Ray Crisp, George LaDuc, and Jack Moody.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 -10:45 Friday morning at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.
The family requests memorials be made in memory of George Edward “Ed” Phillips to the American Legion Post 96, PO Box 424, Hayesville, NC 28904.
