BETTY WIMPEY

Betty Wimpey, 95, of Hayesville died Friday (Jan. 11, 2008) in a Murphy medical center. A native and lifetime resident of Clay County, she was the daughter of the late John Oliver and Laura Barbara Shearer Lyon and the wife of the late Thomas Taft H. Wimpey, who died Nov. 6, 1959. She was a teacher’s assistant in the Hayesville Elementary School for many years, where she was affectionately known as “Granny Wimpey”. She was a member of the Truett Memorial Baptist Church and the Vision Impaired Persons, a visual handicap support group. She loved the group and taking part in their activities. She remained very active for the duration of her life, fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing most of the states of our nation. She loved her family and friends and was a joy to everyone that met her and a blessing to everyone who was lucky enough to know her well.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Howard and Claude Wimpey; a granddaughter, Gina Wimpey Ledbetter; a grandson, Benny Wimpey; a sister, Nannie Belle Phillips; and a brother, Horace Lyon.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Jane Martin and husband, Bill of Franklin, NC; two sons, Bud Wimpey and wife, Sandra and Thomas Wimpey and wife, Jean all of Hayesville; and eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services at 2:00 PM Sunday (Jan. 13) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with Dr. Chester Jones and Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating. Interment in the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers: Barry, Anthony, and Tommy Wimpey, Dan Phillips, Kenny White, and Kip Melmege.
The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 Sunday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Betty Wimpey to the Cherokee and Clay VIP, c/o Christine Mingus, 1917 Fairview Road, Andrews, NC 28901.
