JOHN JORDAN
John Jordan, 87, of Murphy died Friday (July 6, 2007) at a Murphy medical center. He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County. He was the son of the late Jake A. and Julia Teague Jordan and the husband of the late Mary Piven Jordan who died March 24, 2005.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre. In his early years he was an elementary school teacher, then became principal of the Murphy Elementary School, was then superintendent of Murphy city schools and was the first superintendent of the Cherokee County school system. He was a member of the North Carolina Association of Retired Educators. John served on the Murphy Town Council as a councilman for 12 years and also on the Town of Murphy Zoning Board. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and received a fifty year service pin on March 29, 2001. In January of 1964 he was awarded “The Silver Beaver”, the highest award given to a volunteer scouter. He was a charter member of the Murphy Civitan Club where he had held many offices. John was member of the Joe Miller Elkins American Legion Post No. 96 where he had served as a past commander and was also active for the past 20 years on the Veterans Burial Detail. He was a member of the Murphy First Baptist Church and presently president of the Men's Bible Class.
Surviving are three sons, James Richard Jordan and wife, Sheila Faye Stiles Jordan of Ringgold, GA, Thomas Michael Jordan of Waynesville, NC, and Robert Allan Jordan and wife, Karen McGill Jordan of White, GA; two sisters, Irene Vaughn-Lloyd of Lexington, NC, and Hazel Lindsey of Franklin, OH; six grandchildren, Kristin Jordan, Thomas Jordan, Anna Jordan, Rebecca Pfaff and husband, Carl, Cynthia Spearman and husband, Troy, and Angela Jordan; and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Pfaff and Jordan Spearman.
Funeral services at 11:00 AM Monday (July 9) in the Murphy First Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Edwards officiating. Interment in the Sunset Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 96, D.A.V. Chapter 73, V.F.W. Post 10222. Pallbearers: David Hilton, Joe Swain, Bill Hughes, and Ronnie, Gary, and Larry Westmoreland.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Sunday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
