MAX E. KILLIAN


Max E. Killian, 84, of Andrews died Tuesday (July 17, 2007) at his residence. A native of the Caney Branch Section of Cocke County, TN, Max had lived in Andrews for 45 years. He was the son of the late Steven Thomas and Lola Estella Ottinger Killian and the husband of the late Johnnie Lee Killian, who died April 29, 2005 after 58 years of marriage. Max joined the United States Marine Corps in 1941. A sergeant in the 5th Amphibious Corp B Battery 5th 155th mm Howitzer Battalion, his was one of the two troops of Marines who participated directly in Macarthur’s Conquest of the Philippines. He participated in two great Pacific war battles, the Invasions of Tarawa and Leyte. He served on Samoa, Guam, and the Ell ice, Gilbert, Marshall, Hawaiian, and Solomon Islands. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the Battle on Leyte. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he attended East Tennessee State College in Johnson City, TN and was a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Institute. He began a career in broadcasting for WCRK in Morristown, TN and WGRV in Greeneville, TN. He then joined the Magnavox Company of Tennessee and retired after 27 years of service. A former NRA instructor and life member of the NRA, he was also affiliated with the Marine Corps League, DAV, VFW Post 7620, Andrews Rotary Club, and past president of the National Management Association. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church since 1947.
 
He was also preceded in death by a son, Christopher Max Killian; a sister, Mildred Naomi Aiken; and two brothers, T.J. and Howard Dale Killian.
 
Surviving are a daughter, Connie McCabe and husband, George of Andrews;  three grandchildren, Chip Love and wife, Nina, Heather Jones and husband, Dave, and Crystal McCabe; and two great grandchildren, Taylor and Tim Gholston.
 
Graveside services at 10:00 AM Thursday (July 26) in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with United States Marine Corps Chaplin Albert Himsey officiating and military graveside rites conducted by the local Marine Corps League.
 
Memorial service at 3:00 PM Sunday (July 29) in the Episcopal Church of the Messiah with Rector Dr. James A. Johnson officiating.
 
The family will receive friends from 2:00-2:45 Sunday afternoon at the church prior to the services.
