CECILE MILLS PALMER

Cecile Mills Palmer, 90, of Murphy died Tuesday (July 29, 2008) in a Murphy medical center. She was a native of Cherokee County, where she had lived most of her life. She was the daughter of the late William Fred and Ella Lee Abernathy Davis and the wife of the late Clifton C. Mills, who died in 1949 and Ben D. Palmer, who died in 1983. Cecile had worked as a clerk for Davis Jewelry and was a member of the Murphy First Baptist Church where she had served as a teacher in both Sunday School and Training Union, sang in the choir, and was a Church Hostess for eight years.
 
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Madge Davis, Anna Lee Adams, Lena Lovingood, Ethel Hamilton, and Maysie Morris; and five brothers, Arden, Loren, Merle, Boyd, and Kenneth Davis.
 
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Bauguss and husband, Jerry and Glenda Gardner all of Murphy; a sister, Eloise Kelley of McDonough, GA; a sister-in-law, Lona Davis of Murphy; four grandchildren, Will Speed, Lauri Speed, Cliff Gardner and wife, Rossana, and Mason Gardner and wife, Sarah; and a great grandson, Henry Gardner.
 
Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday (Aug. 2) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Ken Phillips officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.  Pallbearers were Sam Davis, Gary Kelley, Bill and Tom Adams, Steven Messervy, and Marlin West.
 
The family received friends from 12-1:45 Saturday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Cecile Mills Palmer to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.
