CHARLIE J. HUGHES

Charlie J. Hughes, of Ranger Road, Murphy, died Wednesday, June 27 at the Murphy Medical Center. He was 82. He was the son of the late DJ and Lassie King Hughes. He was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Hughes of Bristol, TN; and one sister, Winona Hughes of Murphy.
Charlie was retired from Hackney Carolina Company with 43 years of service. He was a veteran, having served in the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater in WWII. He was a member of the Murphy First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and member of several committees for many years. He was a life member of the Murphy Lions Club, having held all offices during his 53 years of Lionism. He was especially active in the management of the Lions Club Swimming Pool, and had since put much effort into the development of the new Hiawassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center. Charlie enjoyed woodcarving, gardening, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Mildred Hawkins Hughes; two sons, Charles E. Hughes and wife, Cissie of Greenville, SC, and Dr. Russell A. Hughes and wife, Lisa of Hayesville; five grandchildren Meghan, Emily, Chip, Jared and Meredith Hughes; one sister, Juanita Hall of Murphy; and 2 nieces, Sybil Cannon and husband, John of Chattanooga, TN, and Vicki Bond and husband, Jeff of Murphy.
The funeral service will be held Friday June 29 at 7PM at the Murphy First Baptist Church with the Reverends Rick Edwards and Chris West officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:45 PM at the church. Burial will be Saturday June 30 at 10 AM in the Greenlawn Memorial Garden in Peachtree. Pallbearers will be Danny Anderson, John Bandy, Royce Hughes, James Hughes, David Hilton, and Charles West. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Burch, John Jordan, and members of the Men’s Bible Class.
