ROBERT HUGH RAYBURN


 

Robert Hugh Rayburn, 69, of Andrews died Monday (June 23, 2008). He was a native and lifelong resident of Andrews and the son of the late Mary Willie Mashburn Gentry and S.R. Rayburn. He had a BS degree in education from Western Carolina University. He taught school in the Cherokee County School System for 36 years and coached baseball and other sports at Andrews High School. Hugh was a retired member of the Andrews Rescue Squad and the Valleytown Rural Fire Department. He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are two brothers, Cecil Mashburn and wife, Barbara and Larry Rayburn and wife, Phyllis all of Andrews; two nieces, Valarie Mashburn and Laura Lee Shook both of Andrews; and three nephews, Jeff Mashburn, and John and Brian Rayburn all of Andrews.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Friday (June 27) in the Andrews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Hacklander officiating and Dane Rickett giving the eulogy. Musicians were Jeri Ruth Smith Roberts, Chris West, and Julie Ledford Aiken. Interment was held in Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers were former baseball players and honorary pallbearers were members of the Andrews Rescue Squad and Valleytown Rural Fire Department with whom he served.

The family received friends from 5:30-8 Thursday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Robert Hugh Rayburn to the Valleytown Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1210, Andrews, NC 28901.
