WALLACE LAWSON TAYLOR
Wallace Lawson “Tooter” Taylor, 73, of Marble died Thursday (March 16, 2006) at his residence. A native of Cherokee County, he had lived in Clayton, GA before returning to Cherokee County in 1990. He was the son of Cora Frances Hicks Taylor Curtis of Andrews and the late Thomas Kermit Taylor.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, serving in the US Navy. After recruit training at San Diego, CA, Taylor was sent to Korea on the USS Iowa. In January 1954, he was transferred to the USS New Jersey at Norfolk, VA. In 1958, he was aboard the USS Mt. McKinley (Flagship) to Leghorn, Italy. In 1961, he was transferred to the USS Francis Marion and in 1968, he was aboard the USS Fort Mandan at Norfolk and a made a Mediterranean cruise and was transferred to Commander Amphibious Squadron in 1969 at Norfolk. He was also on the USS Chilton and the USS Pocono. Wallace retired on February 1, 1973 at Norfolk at the rate of Signalman First Class.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 864 and the Junaluska Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a daughter, Debra Iris Petty of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons, Austin Taylor of Virginia Beach and Lewis Taylor of Buford, GA; two sisters, Harriett Edith Lambert Mansker of Andrews and Claudia Jean Curtis Matheson of Dover, DE; his caretaker, Ronald Lambert of Marble; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at 2:00 PM Saturday (March 18) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with the Revs. Homer Wilson and Lewis Welch officiating. Burial in Valleytown Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Andrews VFW Post 7620. Pallbearers: Ronald, Kenneth, Gary, Glenn, William, and Michael Lambert.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Friday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews.
