JAMES CECIL "J.C." NEWMAN
James Cecil "J.C." Newman, 86, of Murphy died Monday (Nov. 22, 2004) at his residence. A native of Polk County, TN, he had lived in Doraville, GA for 30 years before moving to Cherokee County in 1979. He was the son of the late T.L. and Hattie Staudridge Newman. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army in the Pacific Theatre. He retired after 30 years with General Motors in Doraville. J.C. attended the Hopewell Baptist Church. His hobbies included making a garden and reading.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ken Newman, who died Sept. 16, 1977.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Geneva Mundy Newman; a daughter, Sandra Gibson of Marietta, GA; a son, Steve Newman of Cleveland, TN; two brothers, T.L. Newman of Murphy and Jerry Newman of Tifton, GA; and eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services at 11:00 AM Wednesday (Nov. 24) in the Hopewell Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Maughan officiating. Burial in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post 96, DAV Chapter 73, and VFW Post 10222. Pallbearers: Don Gibson, Randy and Randal Mundy, Ken and Tommy Newman, and Jimmy Hehir.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home Murphy where the body will be until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
The family requests memorials be made to the Hopewell Baptist Church, 215 Hopewell Road, Murphy, NC 28906.
