ROBERT H. SMITH

Robert H. Smith, 76, of Murphy and North Fort Myers, FL died Thursday (Nov. 29, 2007) in an Andrews care facility. A native of Girard, IL, he was the son of the late Samuel O. and Helen Heaton Smith. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the US Navy as a naval aviator. In 1967, he went to work for American Airlines as a commercial pilot and retired in 1991 as a captain for the airline. His hobbies included camping, sailing, skeet shooting, wine making, and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Nancy Coogan Smith; three daughters, Lisa Smith-Ruvalcaba of Chelmsford, MA, Laura Royek of Apex, NC, and Vicki Smith of Springfield, MA; two sons, James J. Smith of Tucson, AZ and Robert O. Smith of Apex; a sister, Beverly Heinecke of San Anselmo, CA; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services at 7:00 PM Saturday (Dec. 1) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with the Rev. Larry Cantrell officiating. A second funeral service at 2:00 PM Friday (Dec. 7) in the Chapel of the Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Fort Myers, FL with entombment following the service.
The family will receive friends from 6-6:45 Saturday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Robert H. Smith to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 550, Charlotte, NC 28210-2102.
