HOWELL
Wiley Howell, 94, of Murphy died Wednesday (Oct. 22, 2003) at his residence.
A native of Mobile, AL, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Florence
Howell. Attending various elementary and high schools in Alabama and Florida,
Wiley attended the University of Florida and Florida State University. Wiley
learned to telegraph at age ten and worked for various telegraph companies
from New England to Kansas City, MO. He also worked in the Senate Press Gallery.
He taught telegraphy in Daytona Beach, FL Junior College and was ordained to
the gospel ministry in 1948. Working 56 years for various railroads, he retired
in
Miami at age 70. After retiring, he was assistant pastor at Florida City Baptist
Church and chaplain of James Archer Smith Hospital in Homestead, FL. He also
served as chaplain to the mobile home parks around the Homestead and Florida
City areas. Wiley also served as assistant to the chaplain at the Florida State
Prison in Florida City.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Rouse Howell; four daughters, Virginia Nelson,
Eleanor Gray, Florence Rogers, and Margaret Carter; five sons, Wiley, James,
David, Jonathon, and Mark Howell; and 24 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services at 10:00 AM Monday (Oct. 27) in the Newcomer Family Funeral
Home, East Orlando Chapel. Interment in Daytona Memorial Park-South.
The family will receive friends from 11-2 Sunday afternoon at the Newcomer
Family Funeral Home.
