JAMES THOMAS PRICE
James Thomas Price, 87, of Jarrett Rd., Hayesville died Saturday, October 30, 2004 in a Murphy medical center. He was a native of Clay County, where he had lived most of his life. He was the son of the late William H. and Lillie Carter Price. James was a graduate of Berea College, receiving a teaching degree. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre as a medic. In his early life, James taught agriculture in the Clay County school system, and most of his life was a dairy farmer. James was a recipient of the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, had served on the Board of Directors of the Clay County Historical and Arts Council, and instrumental in creating the Vintage Farm Implement exhibit. He was active in Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District, avid environmentalist, and conservationist, and lifelong supporter of heritage preservation efforts. He was one of the founders of the Jarrett Road Club and Beautification project, and was a past member of the Clay County Board of Education. He was a member of the Oak Forest United Methodist Church where he had held numerous positions.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Laura Carter, Euline Jarrett, and Norma Noel, and a brother, Edgar Price.
Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Palmer, and Eunice Hendrix, both of Hayesville; a brother, Fred H. Price of Fairview, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at 4:00 PM Tuesday (Nov. 2) in the Oak Forest United Methodist Church with Revs. Jacob Kyker, and Wanda Galloway officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Pallbearers: Charles Penland, Jack Smart, Bill Kenyon, Dan McGlamery, Glen Brechbill, and Jackie Sellers.
The family will receive friends from 2:45-3:45 Tuesday at the Oak Forest United Methodist Church prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Oak Forest United Methodist Church, c/o Keith Crawford, 260 Golf Course Rd, Hayesville, NC 28904.
